Ryanair capitalises on Malev demise

News Friday, 03 February 2012 16:05 Written by  Dominic Welling

Ryanair has announced it will re-open its Budapest base with the launch of 31 new routes, just hours after the Hungarian national carrier

Malév declared it had ceased operations due to “untenable” debts.

At a press conference in Budapest, Ryanair said that it will base four new B737s at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport from February 17, when it will also open 31 new routes to replace most of those lost by last night’s grounding of Malev.

Meanwhile, the low-cost airline said it will be holding an open recruitment day in Budapest next Tuesday inviting job applications from Malev pilots, cabin crew and engineers to service the new routes.

Some, but not all of Ryanair’s 31 new routes will include:

  • Manchester
  • Munich West (Memmingen)
  • Barcelona (El Prat)
  • Milan (BGY)
  • Warsaw (Modlin)
  • Bologna Boku
  • Oslo (Rygge)
  • Brussels (CRL)
  • Paris (Beauvais)
  • Dublin
  • Eindhoven
  • Gottenburg
  • Rome (CIA)
  • Hamburg (LBC)
  • Stockholm (NYO)
  • Krakow
  • London (STN)
  • Madrid

The carrier pulled out of the Hungarian capital in October 2010 after the airport authority rejected its request to lower landing charges.
