Airlines line up to buy bmi

News Tuesday, 27 September 2011 10:52 Written by Oliver Clark

Virgin Atlantic and International Airlines Group (IAG) have admitted an interest in acquiring all or part of bmi, after owners, Lufthansa, revealed that it was seeking financial advice on a potential sale of the loss making UK-based carrier.

A British Airways spokeswoman said the airline had made no secret of its interest in bmi’s approximately 10% share of slots at Heathrow, while Virgin said it was interested in ‘combining’ with the carrier. Emirates has ruled itself out of the bidding race.

John Strickland, of JLS Consulting, said UK carriers, such as Flybe and Eastern Airways, may also be interested in acquiring part of the carrier.

“Bmi is composed of three businesses: bmi; bmi baby; and bmi regional, all very different parts focused on very different markets. Flybe or even Eastern Airways might be interested in the regional network,” he said.
