Routes News explores the network opportunities and underserved markets of Berlin.

Facilities: What key attributes can Berlin as a destination offer to airlines?

The new facilities at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) opening in June 2012 offer more capacity and guarantee short distances and fast connections between flights. Oneworld as well as Start Alliance offer many onward connections via BER, making it the perfect transfer point to all over Germany and Europe.

The main advantage of Berlin is that it is a destination in itself. Berlin is very popular worldwide and nearly 10 million people visited the city last year, making it number three in Europe after London and Paris. In addition the large catchment area with around 10 million people within 120 min driving time provides a huge potential for the airlines.

Catchment area: How much capacity will be available when the new airport opens?

The new airport will have a capacity of 27-30 million passengers when it opens. With 24 million passengers in 2011 it means we will continue expanding the airport. New check-in facilities will open in the beginning of 2013. The airport can grow to handle between 45 and 50 million passengers.

Berlin-catchment stats

Markets: What markets are underserved from Berlin?

Because of the geographical  location and the demand we see  a number of potential markets in  Asia, eg Japan, China, Thailand or Vietnam. High demand also comes from the West where Berlin is a popular destination – especially from the US, Canada and Brazil.

Europe is already well-served  by Berlin Brandenburg but some  niche markets are currently underserved or not served and are open for development, eg CIS.  These markets show a large  inbound potential.

Data: What information/data can you provide to airlines interested in starting a new route?

We are able to make a complete route analysis  for airlines, using our own data, MIDT data and some specific German passenger statistic.  Our marketing team works very closely with  the tourism and business development organisations so that further market information can be provided.

Operational limitations: Are there any limitations on international airlines operating to Berlin?

All aircraft types can be handled at the new airport. A night curfew will be in place between midnight and 5am local time. The two-runway system means that there are no slot constraints at BER.

Incentives: What sort of support is on offer for an airline considering a new route from Berlin?

Berlin Brandenburg Airport developed tailor-made  support packages, ranging from a new destination incentive starting at 80% reduction in landing and passenger fees to different marketing support schemes depending on the proposed route. In addition we offer various marketing tools to target business or leisure travellers. Through the cooperation with the Berlin Tourist Board we can assist in promoting Berlin worldwide.
